VALUELESS CHEQUES.
THREE CHARGES ADMITTED. COURT ORDERS RESTITUTION. " He is more foolish than criminal," said Mr. Wyatt in the Police Court yesterday v:hen George Inman Blackerpleaded guilty- to three charges of obtaining money by false pretences by tendering valueless cheques for £l4 10s. Chief-Detective Cummings said accused came to Auckland last March and opened a small account at the Bank of New Zealand, later having it transferred to the Devonport branch. He himself tendered two small cheques, which were dishonoured, and in September, although he knew the state of his balance, he drew three cheques for £4, £1 10s and £9. He had evidently keen drinking, for he got a woman to cash the cheques for him in order that he might buy drink. He was married, and looked after his family fairly well. He had been previously charged with similar offences. Mr. Wyatt said accused had been drinking, and he did not think ho could account for his actions at the time. Ho had explained to the woman who cashed the cheques that he had no money in the bank, but that he was expecting some commission. This was true. He had been very foolish, for if he had only spoken to his wife the whole matter would have been cleared up. Counsel suggested that a term of probation would meet the case. Accused needed some supervision. The Magistrate, Mr. Cutten: What about a prohibition order ?—Counsel: Yes, that would probably do some good. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. He was ordered to make restitution of £l4 10s, and to take out a prohibition order.
