IMPORTS FROM AMERICA.
Sir,—The letter signed by " C.H.N " in Thursday's Herald, is about the funniest thing" I have seen yet. Apparently he advises us to buy American goods hi order to help up the customs revenue. This sounds to me like burning the furniture to keep the house warm. He must know perfectly well that every penny spent on American goods here goes to U.S.A. never to return. On the contrary British goods are paid for by our primary products and even if they are in certain cases dearer it would still pay us to buy them. Mr. Coates sounded the right note in asking the U.S.A. to buy three times more than they do. Until they do, we ought to refrain from buying their goods. N. G. Harries.
