The Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, presided at to-day's sitting of the Imperial Conference. Mr. W. T. Cosgrave (Irish Free State) -was the only • absentee. As chairman of the Imperial Defence Committee Mr. Baldwin mado a general statement. Earl Beatty, Admiral of the Fleet, and the Earl of Birkenhead, Secretary of Stato for India, followed. The entire discussion was confidential. The Genearl Economic Committee subsequently met and dealt with Empire statistics. The Forestry Committee reviewed its agenda. It was stated that the Imperial Forestry Institute at Oxford had increased its students from 22 to 35. They proceeded to all parts of the Empire and included probationers and experienced men who were taking refresher courses. The Forestry Committee is considering the creation of an Empire Forestry bureau. The Earl of Balfour presided at a meeting of the Research Committee. Ho surveyed its work, which embraces the interImperial exchange of technical and scientific information. The conference will not sit to-morrow as there is to be a meeting of the Cabinet, but the committees on interImperial relations and Mandates will meet. The Prime Minister of New Zealand, | Mr. J. G. Coates, this evening interviewed the Prince of Wales at St. James' Palace.
