WELLINGTON RACES.

The fact that Wellington provided on® of its most perfect days for the first day of the October race meeting was a matter of general congratulation on Saturday at Trentham Racecourse, says a Wellington exchange. The stands looked their best in the bright sunshine and the recent rain had clothed the lawns in vivid green, which was exceptionally beautiful as the afternoon shadows fell. The tree 3 were also at their best, especially the weeping ashes, with their cream, green and gold blossoms. Very beautiful beds of .pansien and others of many shaded polyanthus were much admired and there is promise of a good show of roses this year. There were many charming frocks, though there was an absence of general brilliancy of colour, a green, mauve, scarlet, or yellow costume making quite an impression among a great number of shaded brown, blue and many black frocks. Henna shades, bois de rose, cyclamen and almond green were well represented, especially the firstnamed, and scarlet frocks and touches of the same vivid colour on the black or blue frocks showed that that is to be a favourite this season. The:-"o was a distinct change in tihe style of the hats and quite a departure from the close-fitting capote. Most people favoured crinoline straws, rather large, flat at the back, and with shady brims over the faces—a becoming fashion and one not in the least affected by the bobbed or shingled hair. Feathers and flowers were both mnch worn as trimming, also plaited ribbons in contrasting shades. A few bright parasols or Japanese umbrellas were used, enough to gather the idea that a great many would lend a charming effect to an entertainment, and bo " finish to the landscape."
