NEW LYNN WORKS.

IMPROVING THE ROADS. The New Lynn Town Boa;-d met on Tuesday evening, the chairman, Mr. W. G. Lovie, presiding. British Pavements, Ltd., wrote informing the board that they had been instructed by the City Council to bitumenise the carriageway on both sides of the Whau Bridge, to link up with the concrete roadway. It was decided to accept an offer at 6s 3d a yard made by British Pavements, Ltd., to resurface the decking of the Whau Bridge. The traffic inspector reported that on Labour Day the number of motor vehicles crossing Whau Bridge averaged 500 an hour. Unless steps were speedily taken to build a two-way bridge at this important crossing he feared a serious accident might occur. It was decided to erect an additional 12 street lights. The chairman was authorised to obtain fuli information from the Waitemata Power Board regarding the advisability of New Lynn joining the board's area. Nine applications were received for the position of road foreman. The number was reduced to four, and a final decision will be made at a special meeting next Tuesday. Loan proposals for road construction were discussed. It was thought it would bo inadvisable to put a complete scheme to the ratepayers this year, in view of the fact that a large loan would bo required for drainage. A list of roads which require urgent treatment was submitted, viz., Queen Street, Wattle Street, Gardner Street, Willerton Avenue, Rimu Street, Totara Avenue, corner of Margan and Astlev Avenues, Smith Street and Great North Road. The gross estimated cost is £SOOO.
