THE CIVIC CENTRE.
Sir,—The population of Auckland is about 190,000, but less than half of "these are in the city proper. If we are to go in for a scheme more elaborate than has ever been suggested for Sydney, with a population of a million, is it reasonable that the whole burden should be shouldered by a fraction of the ratepayers ? Residents of surrounding districts will benefit equally with those who dwell within the city boundary, and it seems to me that a Greater Auckland should precede a scheme of the kind. If Little Auckland is the ideal thing, the only logical policy is to turn Ponsoiiby, Parnell, Grey Lynn, etc., into separate bodies and let the civic centre be paid for hy the property-owners in the immediate vicinity of the Town Hill.
