IMMIGRATION OF BOYS.

ANGLICAN CHURCH SCHEME. NEED FOR TRAINING FARM. So far two parties of boys have arrived at Auckland under the Church of England Empire Settlement Scheme, 26 in June, and 28 by the Hororata at the beginning of this week. The scheme was referred to by Archbishop Averill in his charge to the Diocesan Synod yesterday. The Archbishop* stated that both batches had been placed on farms. "As far as we can gather," he added, "the majority of the bovs in the first batch are making good, and good reports have been received from boys and from employers. The large number of applications received from fanners is an indication that there is an opening in this country for boys of good character and physique, and that the Church is doing a useful work for New Zealand and for the Old Country. "Our committee is being a urged to nominate families for settlement in New Zealand, in addition to the nomination of boys, but so far wo have not seen our way clear to undertake such nominations. Positions have been found for a limited number oi ! single men, but until proper provision is made by the Government for settling migrants on tho land, we ifeel that we should not bo justified in encouraging general immigration lest wo make ourselves responsible for further unemployment." The Archbishop said it was hoped that the Bishop of London, who would be j visiting Auckland early in March in connection with the scheme, would he willing to speak in the Town Hall upon the subject. His visit should give much help and encouragement.
