AUCKLAND DICKENS CLUB.
AN EVENING WITH PICKWICK. The concluding gathering for the present season of the Auckland Dickens Club was hold last evening, when there was an attendance of between 60 and 70 members and friends. The evening, which opened with the. third of the club's teas, was specially devoted to "Pickwick." The president, the Rev. A- B. Chappell, defivered an address on the history of the Pickwick Papers and this was followed by a representation of the trial of the breach of promise suit, Bwlell v. Pickwick. The various, familiar characters in this famous case were fs.ithfufly portrayed and the production was a most successful one. The remainder of (he programme consisted of readings from the Pickwick Papers. The president stated that the increasing membership and tin* growing interest in the club showed that its success was assured. He announced that the first annual meeting would be held in April next, and that in the interval it was hoped to arrange two special gatherings--one at the Christmas period and one on the occasion of the anniversary of the birthday of Charles Dickens in February.
