POSTAL PACKET OPENED.
THEFT CHARGE ADMITTED. "CANNOT RESIST TEMPT AT! ON." [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT-] TE AWAMUTU. Thursday. " I cannot resist temptation when handling cash or other valuables. I can work hard for lb hours a day but when placed in a position of responsibility I succumb to temptation." This statement was made by Ernest Alfred Turner, when pleading guilty in the Te Awarautu Police Court to-day to the theft of a postal packet containing £l. The evidence showed that Turner was employed by a mail contractor at Te Kuwa, delivering and receiving letters on the Pokura rural delivery route. Last May a settler handed him a letter to register at Te Kawn. Turner opened it, abstracted the money and posted the letter in a new envelope to the addressee in England. The letter was returned to the writer, who complained to the postal authorities. Constable Doyle took up the investigation and to him Turner admitted the theftAccused was committed for sentence at the Auckland Supreme Court.
