WHANGAREI INTERESTS.
EXPRESS TRAIN SERVICE. A SECOND STOP WANTED. [bt telegraph.— own correspondent.] WHANGAREI, Thursday. The desirability of express t,rain3 stopping at- Mair station w r as discussed at a meeting of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce last evening, when it was urged that trains, especially those from the north, should stop at the northern station to serve the interests of people residing at, that end of the town. It was stated that probably more local residents would get out at Mair station than at Whangarei, if enabled to do so. It was resolved that a committee should look into the matter. The Mayor, Mr. J. E. Holmes, has bean appointed delegate to the annual meeting of the. Dominion Chambers of Commerce, to be held in Wellington. Warm summer weather prevailed this afternoon for the opening of the Whangarei Bowling Club's greens, and the lawns of the Ladies' Croquet Club. Both were declared open by Mr. D. Kerr, president of the Bowling Club. There was an attendance of about 50 from each club, in addition to a number of visitors. The greens were in splendid order, with a fine carpet, but after the rains of the past few days they were too heavy to be played upon. After Mrs. Kerr had rolled the first jack and Mrs. Walker, president of the Croquet Club, had driven the first ball, afternoon tea was served in the pavilion. Mr. E. H. Steadman, Northern representative on the Auckland Centre, announced that the formation of a Northern Centre, with headquarters at Whangarei, would lie ratified this month. The new centre would be declared at a conference to be held on November 25.
