ALBERT STREET OUTLET.
AN ALTERNATIVE PROPOSAL. PLANS TO BE PREPARED. The revived proposal to extend Albert Street to Vincent Street was before the City Council last evening. The council previously considered this proposal, but abandoned the idea after it had been suggested that steps should be taken to acquire a section in Cook Street opposite the southern termination of Albert Street on which the owners, Messrs Hatrick and Company, propose to erect a concrete building. A deputation to the Works Committee of the council, consisting of Mr. W. J. Holdsworth and 28 others, requested that the council should reconsider its decision not to proceed with the extension and that it should proceed with the raising of the low level portions of Albert Street between Wyndham and Victoria iStreets and between Victoria and Wellesley Streets. The deputation expressed the opinion that the council should have waited until the report of the civic centre commission was available before determining the question of the extension of Albert Street. The Works Committee recommended last evening that the City engineer should develop alternative proposals not affecting Messrs. Hatrick's building operations for the continuation of Albert Street and report regarding the council's powers in dealing with the matter under the Town Planning Act. It was also recommended that the matter of filling the low levels of Albert Street was one on which the council should consider proposals from the property owners concerned. These recommendations were adopted.
