CITY STREET NAMES.

ALTERATIONS CONFIRMED. SELWYN TERRACE UNCHANGED. The special order passed by the City Council two weeks ago changing the names of u number of streets in the,' city tx> avoid confusion with streets in other districts bearing similar names, was confirmed at the meeting of the council last evening, after an amendment had been made deleting the proposal to change tjao name of Selwyn Terrace, Parnell, to Sheldon Terrace. The report of the Works Committee showed that representations had been received from several quarters urging that the name of Selwyn Terrace, Parnell, should be retained on account of the intimate association of the late Bishop Selwyn with the street. A petition had also been received from a number of residents and property owners asking the council to reconsider its decision to change the name of Alexandra dtreet, in the city r to Airedale Street. In connection with this matter the city engineer stated that the reason for changing the name of Alexandra Street, city, was that Alexandra Street, Edon Terrace, was a boundary road between the city and Mount Albert. Thus two local authorities were concerned and tlie council in the past had adopted the principle tliafc in cases were names werfduplicated the change should be . Made where only one authority was affected. The same reason existed" in the cafe of Selwyn Terrace, as Selwyn Road, Epsom, was a boundary road between the city and Mount Rosliill, and was an important residential street connecting Parr Road, The Drive and St. Andrew's Road, all more or loss arterial thoroughfares. The committee recommended that the proposed change of the name of Selwyn Terrace, Parnell, should be struck out of the special order, thus allowing the name to remain as at present. In the case of Alexandra Street the committee recommended that the proposed change to Airedale Street should be confirmed. The committee further recommended that the change of the name of Albert Street, Point Chevalier, to Atkins Street should not be made at present. The recommendations were adopted; and, with the amendments, the special order was confirmed.
