A terrible gas explosion occurred at the Durban Navigation colliery at Newcastle, Natal. I Tho shaft of the mine was completely destroyed. ( A large number of natives and four white men were entombed and 116 na- ( tives and four w T hito men were killed. Rescue parties are at work. Already 30 dead natives have been brought out.
