INTERESTS OF THE EMPIRE.
DISCUSSIONS IN ENGLAND. POLICIES OF CONSERVATIVES. PARTY CONFERENCE SUPPORT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 7.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Snn. LONDON. Oct. 9. The Conservative Conference at Scarborough yesterday carried some comprehensive resolutions. Theso urged an increase in Empiro supplies of food and raw materials, improved Empire communication by land and air, inter-Empire dissemination of the possibilities and requirements of tho component parts of the Empire, and a proper Empire news service. Another resolution, which was carried unanimously, stated that in view of the i success of the policies of safeguarding industries and Imperial preference in their limited application, tho conference called for the widest possible extension of these policies as offering tho most hopeful solution of tho problem of unemployment, 'the relief of the taxpayer, and the development of the markets of the Empire. A resolution demanding the termination of the agreement with Russia, the closing of Soviet agencies and tho repatriation of all persons engaged in them was also carried. "The relationship of the Dominions and ourselves with foreigners, the extent to which the marketing of Empiro produce is interwoven with transport, and Empire migration, are the three most important practical questions which are to come before the Imperial Conference," said Mr. J. n. Thomas, M.P., whu was Secretary of State for the Colonies in the Labour Government, in an interview with a representative of tho Financial News. He said he was not suro that theso conferences should always bo held in London. He thought they might with advantage sometimes bo held in the Dominions. Viscount Chelmsford, who was First Lord of tho Admiralty in the Labour Government, said he would liko to see a permanent Imperial Secretary appointed with his headquarters in London to doal with great Empire problems. The idea was not new, but it should bo kept in the forefront.
