CANTERBURY JOTTINGS.

NEW ZEALAND CUP WEIGHTS. STAR STRANGER REHANDICAPPED [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. Mr. J. E. Henrys has increased the impost of Star Stranger in the Now Zealand Cup by 4lb for his win in the Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick, and the Martian gelding will have 9st to carry if he starts in the Cup. This is as much as ho could receive at this stage. The handicapper could have allotted him up to 9st (jib in his original handicap; but under the conditions of the race he could not go beyond weight-for-age when rehandioapping for a win. The penally condition in this direction was framod in the days of the fist Tib minimum, and it does not work so equitably with the minimum raised to 7st. Rapier and Shining Armour were scratched for the New Zealand Cup this week. Riccarton stables will be strongly represented at the Dunedin Jockey Club's Spring meeting, more than twenty horses being under orders for the trip to Wingatui. G. J. Pine was the first of the local trainers to leave for the South. His team consists of Paper Bov, Crossbow and the two-year-old Fair Exchange. He got away on Friday. It was a late decision that caused Paper Boy to be included. Fair Exchange looks the best of the Riccarton juveniles, and he will probably be hard to beat in the McLean Stakes. 0. Murray Aynsley will have a useful team racing at Wingatui. Footfall started the season well by winning at tho Ashburton meeting and, as he has been galloping in good style since then, he may get some more money on the trip. Paperchase and Zarisee have been bowling along freely in their work and they are likely to prove smart fillies. Rivalry and Miss Flighty. H. Cutts will take throe of Sir George Clifford's horses South. Rivalry has been galloping well and in a small field she may be hard to beat in the Mosgiel Handicap. Front Rank, who promised particularly well at one stage of her career, looks in good order, though there has been nothing specially impressive about her work. Miss Flighty showed fair form as a two-year-old and she may pick up a hack race, very soon. R. Emerson will take Kilbox and Bolero south. Kilbox. who has been a failure so far, should improve with racing, but he may not be at his best for some time. His mate is a very promising two-year-old. J. Lindsay has Gold Mint. Lady Clareneeux and Waterloo in good fettlo for their Wingatui engagements. Gold Mint raced well enough at Geraldine to suggest an early win. A. McAulay's pair. Sir Roy and Trmaway, have been working, we]l lately. Sir Roy created favourable impression when he won a,t Kurow. nnd he looks like staying. Tho two-year-old Tripaway is a smart galloper, but she stonped so quickly in her race at Oamaru that her chance in good company does not look particularly bright. Countersign has done well since she won at the Ashburton meeting, and E. Sconllar may get some more money with her on the Wingatui trip. Canterbury Spring Meeting. Carnot has not always pleased in his recent track work, and Tarleton beat him soundly over six furlongs a few days ago. Carnot was in fine fettle when he contracted a severe cold during a trip to Trentham in July, and although he has done a lot of work since he resumed training, it is doubtful if he is hack to his best form. It will be a matter for regret if the cold has left permanent ill-effects. H. Ellis has Margaret Birney in good fettle, and sbo only has to repeat her track form to show up in some of tho hack races at Wingatui. The nominations for half a dozen of the leading events at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting are not quite so numerous as last year, but tho falling off is not serious, and indications point to good fields being on hand Class is represented by Grand Knight, Reremoana, Rapine, Star Stranger, Count Cavour, The Hawk, Glentruin. Beacon Light, while Commendation, Battlement, Young Lochinvar and Seatown are among tho three-year-olds freely engaged. Sir George Clifford will not have any two-year-olds racing at Wingatui this week. From various causes they are all backward, and even if the stable shelters any good jnvoniles— a point which still has to be remembered —they will not be at their best for some time. J. Reale will ride Tanadees in the Zealand Cup. He will also pilot Commendation in the Derby if L. O. Morris is not able to ride, as seems pTobahle. Jubilant is showing signs of soreness. It will be a matter for regret if the trouble is serious, as she looks like paying her way. The Riccarton contingent for Trentham may be small. There is a cood batch of nominations, but many of the horses are also engaged at the North Canterbury meeting. -
