CAULFIELD MEETING OPENS

MANFRED AND RAMPION WIN. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Oct. 10. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club's spring meeting was opened at Caulfield yesterday in fine, bright weather. Ram fell early in the morning and as a result the race track was in a dead state. Lhero was a large attendance. Redshank led for the last five furlongs in the lola Welter, winning narrowly. The jockfey, J. Daniels, has ridden the last three winners in this race. Bonefix and Loch Tay fell. Bcnehx broke a fetlock and w&s destroyed. . F.uston led throughout in the Debutante Stakes, winning easily, and establishing a course record for the race. He cost 200gns as a yearling. Euston also won at Flemington last week. . Manfred led for the last mile in the Caulfield Stakes, scoring comfortably. The last half mile was covered m 50s. and the Inst six furlongs in lm 14}s, The owner, Mr B. Chafley, won this race last year with Whittier. Manfred, who is engaged in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, has now won nine races and nearly £23,000 in Rampion led all the way in the Caulfield Guineas and won easily, never being extended. Heroic's brother Thracian finished well in second place, but he had no chance with the winner. Mr. James Grice, chairman of the club, presented the owner, {ji-, J E. Brien, with the Guineas riband. Rampion has 7.9 in the Melbourne Cup. There wore six falls in the steeplechase, four in the straight. Needlework, ridden by W. Goddard. won very easily.
