CLUBS' OFFICIAL OPENING. WEATHER MARS GATHERINGS. No bowling matches were played in Auckland on Saturday afternoon, the wet weather interfering with the fixtures. In spite of th 6 rain the Paputoetoe and Avondale Clubs held their official opening ceremonies, but little play Was possible. Several heads were played at Avondale, however, before rain necessitated a halt. The match. Press and Printers v. Carlton, was about to start, when heavy rain fell. .This fixture will be decided next Saturday. FUNCTION AT PAPATOETOE. * The opening of the Papaloetoe Club was, to a certain extent, spoiled by the unsuitable weather. However, a large number of visitors and local enthusiasts arrived at tho green and were suitably entertained in tho club's pavilion. Mr. F. M. Waters, president, of the club, welcomed the visitors and called on Mr. E. D. McLennan, M.P., to address those present. In the course of his remarks Mr. McLennan touched upon the growth of Papatoetoo and the progress of the club. Ho complimented the club on having won the pennant competition last season, and expressed a hope that the club would be equally successful in the season just beginning. Mr. Waters, on behalf of the club, then presented Mr. <T. Watson, late green superintendent. with a handsome bowline case as a mark of esteem and appreciation of his labours in past seasons. Mr. Watson suitably replied. On behalf of the visitors Mr. T?. K. R.udman. president of the Mount Eden Club, returned thanks fo*- the hospitality shown and especially thanked the ladies who provided afternoon tea. Although the green could not be opened for play, those present spent, a very enjoyable afternoon af cards and billiards. OPENING OF AVONDALE CLUB. In view.of the undesirability of the club's opening ceremony conflicting with other similar functions, the Avondale officials decided to proceed with its programme. . A large number of visitors was present, including Mr. J. Tlardley. president of the Dominion Bowling Council, Mr. J. Pascoe, president of Ihe Auckland Bowling Centre, Messrs. J. Thompson and G. Gladding, members of the Dominion Bowling Council, and Mr. R. Maaon, M.P. for "Eden. Mr. J" Johnston, the president, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors and complimented the club on the improvements which had beer, carried out during the recess. He also thanked the members for the way in which they had assisted with (.he work of installing the drainage and improvements to the pavilion. Mr. Harrison, the green-keoper. was complimented on the fine condition- of the greens. Mr. Hardley, in replying, congratulated the club on the appearance of the grounds eenerally and the harmony that existed in the club, stating it was always a pleasure to visit Avondale. Mr. Pascoe congratulated the club on its tine performance in winning the B section in the nennant comnetit'ons last season and said" it would give him great pleasure to be able to present the pennant banner to Avondale at tho close of this season. Mr. W. J. Ta.it, Mayor of \vondale, presented the club with a very fine new flag. The president then invited Mrs. Johnston to throw the jack. Unfortunately heavy rain set in just after play commenced and only a few heads were plaved. The Avondale brass band rendered a fine programme during the afternoon. The green will be closed next Friday and Saturday when a grand bazaar will be held in the football training shed. WAIUKU CLUB'S OPENING. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WAIUKU. Saturday. The official opening of the Waiuku Bowling Club's greens was held this afternoon but owing to the wet weather play was not attempted. Visitors were present from the Pukekohe. Buckland and Tuakau Clubs. The president of the Northern Waikato Bowling Association. Mr. J. H. Keith, was also present. The green as declared opwen by the "resident, of the Waiuku Club. Mr. O. V. Williams, and Mrs. Williams threw the first jack, The croquet lawn was also opened. Mrs. S Neil, president, of the croquet division, driving the first ball. ROTORUA CLUB OPENED. [riY TELEGRAPH.--OWN CORRESPONDENT, j ROTORUA. Saturday. The official opejiing of tho Rotorua Howl- j ing Club was held before a large gathering. Tho president,, Mr. C. R. Tapper, welcomed the friends and visitors, He asked Mrs. Tapper to thrown the jack and bowl the the first, bowl. The green was then declared open for the season. Owing to the rain an adjournment was made to the kiosk for the afternoon, where a very pleasant time was spent.
