TE PUKE DISTRICT.
RIVER IMPROVEMENT WORK. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE PUKE. Saturday. At a meeting of the Kaituna River Board yesterday Mr. J. A. Anderson, engineer, reported that the dredge had been doing good work during the past month and that the cut from the Maketu estuary to the Kaituna River had been made during the week. Tho result of this initial operation was said to be very satisfactory. The cut just completed had a width of 40ft., and this was to be widened to 80ft., after which sand bars in the estuary would be dredged. The reopening of tho old outlet at Maketu and the diversion of the Kaituna River should lie completed by tho end of the year. The next work will be cutting off bends and straightening the Kaituna River at several points. The local Methodist Church Trust Board decided unanimously to recommend the Rev. Aker to the next conference for reappointment. Mr. Aker was elected representative to tho district synod to be held at Morrinsviile next month. As a result of the showery weather extending over a week, the pastures in the district are looking remarkably well. Thero is a splendid growth of grass.
