The Minister of Public Works advised that with regard to the application for Government assistance in connection with the cost of re-erecting the Makotuku Stream Bridge at. Raetihi, the matter has been considered and the estimated cost was about, £4500. The department, would assist to the extent of providing £1 for £3, but as the item had not been provided for on this year's Estimates it would not he possible for the Government's portion of the cost to he made available during this financial year. A workers' dwelling loan of £SOOO has been advanced by the Public Trust Office. A good track has been formed in the Huikumu Riding on the Pipiriki Road, sufficient for motor traffc, and it, is anticipated other slips will be cleared by November. Repairs have been necessary on the Pipiriki Wharf Road. A subsidence or under-slip has occurred on the Matupuna Hill in the Horopito Riding. In the Manganui Riding flood water damage has been repaired on the Manganui Valley Road, and tho Makara reserve is boint? fenced to enclose a portion where it is proposed to plant trees. Slips have been cleared on tho Parapara Road from the section of the road re cently widened by the Public Works Department,. and the road is now open for wheel traffic. In the Karioi Riding repairs have been done to the Turakina Valley Road, the Waiouru Road, and the swamp raised near Tangiwai. A request has been made to tho Public Works Department to make the whole of the money available for metalling Harris' deviation. Slip clearing work lias been commenced in the Ruatiki Riding.
