Tn spite of the fact that there was a downpour of rain all Friday night the Otaki Racing Club decided to conclude its meeting today. Heavy rain fell and the course was waterlogged. As was only • < J be expected the attendance was limited and there was a heavy decrease in all sources of revenue. For the Puketoi Hurdles Elvaette and Hokioi were very evenly supported and they had the race to themselves. Elvaette drew awav from Hokioi after the pair had risen at the last fence together and -won by four lengths. Carawock ran on better than the others to run a poor third. For the Trial Plate Polonaise had the most supporters. She did not jump out well and but for Kilmezzo falling a few yards from the post her supporters could not havo claimed a second dividend. Girribillie was early in front and led Kilmezzo and Starbird over most of the journey. He was a length in front of Kilmezzo with six or seven yards to go but Kilmezzo slipped and fell and gained second place. John Nod was third. Kilperon. who had run an excellent race in the chief handicap yesterday installed a good favourite for the Otakii Hack to-day. He temped out when the harper rose and led all the way to win by two lengths from Sir Moment, who finished hotter than any of the others. _ Shining Armour and Nukumai were the only two supported to any extent in the Teone Memorial Stakes. The early running was made bv Killoch, who was followed by Captain Gazoley and Kilfaire. At the half-mile post there was little between Killoch, Captain Gazeley. Kilfaire and Diogenes but racing to the straight Captain Ciazeley led Kilfaire and Killoch. The first-named pair were taken wide out, and L. Fine, seizing the opportunity, rushed Killoch through on the inside to win from Captain Gazeley by nearly two lengths Shining Armour got up in the last stride to beat Kilfaire for third place. Lucky Dare and Glen Innes monopolised the betting in the Pukekaraka Hack After passing tho four-furlong post Royal .band moved up fast but at the home turn Glen Innes was just clear of Lucky Days -nd Hvnotic. Over the .last furlong Lucky Days ran on best to win from .Hypnotic and Bonnie Marion. . Gold Box, who was very unlucky in his first day's contest, was backed down to a short price for the Rekereke Handicap. After passing the four-furlong post he drew well clear and ultimately won very easily by half a dozen lengths from Joy Bird, who stopped badly and only lasted long enough to beat L*dy . , , For the Rahui Hack Royal Mint had most friends, carrying more than half of the grand total. From an excellent start Jazzy began quickly and continued to lead until a hundred yards from the -winning post where Royal Mint passed her to win by a little more than a head. Panart was six lengths away third. A most unpleasant day concluded with tho Waiorongomai Handicap Beaumont was a warm favourite. After allowing Bomdeer to lead over six furlongs the rider mont called on the .gelding and ho ran home a very easy winner. WELLINGTON NOTES. FORM AT OTAKI MEETING. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Saturday. During the last few days much rain has fallen at Trentham, and in consequence the track work has been of little importance. H Telford took Modern to Otaki. where she showed up well for some. distance in her race yesterday. Modern is well forward and should do well soon. Trenthani stableo were well represented on tho opening day of the Otaki meeting. 5 Reid was successful m winning the chief event with Indian Sage, while A. Goodman (Black MintJ, and J. Gage Williams (Buoyant) won minor races. Buoyant, who formerly did hia racing in the South Island, but is now owned and trained in tho Wellington Province, made his first appearance in tho north yesterday at Otaki, where he made an exhibition of his opponents in the Kereihi Roera Welter. Hia connections did not benefit much by the big dividend. Since his good showing ovpr the Winter Cup mile at Riccarton last August Indian Sago haa put in some solid work that suggested hia being able to run out at east a mile and a quarter. In fact, had he gone to Ellerslie for the Avondale meeting many good judges were prepared to support him in the Avondale Cup. that there was ground for such confidence was proved by the very easy manner that Indian Sago won tho Ling Memorial yeathe Trentham-trained Hokioi bears an improved appearance compared with that of last Beason his efforts in public since coming to Trentham have been anything but impressive. Fool's Paradise had been responsible for good, if not brilliant, track work at Trentram, and he was started at Otaki yesterday, carrying tho confidence of his owner and trainer. He began with great, brilliancy. but just where his superiority was expected ho failed and was well back at thii finish. Tho South Island light-weight, C. Eastwood, was brought to the Otaki meeting to rido Rouex in the Linp Memorial, but whatever chance that gelding had in the event was nullified by getting a bad bump from Degage, which sent, him back last. Ilouex was not prominent afterwards. Since its last meeting the Otaki Racing Club has removed the old judge's box and replaced it with a structure built on high concrete foundations. The present box has been placed well back and stands parallel with tho steward's stand. The change from every point of view is a big improvement on the old order. Bank Note, who showed promising form in two-year-old races last season and is bred for something higher than "scurries." was backed down to a very short price in the Maiden Race at Otaki yesterday. Fred Tilley had him fairly well forward in condition. and in addition he had the valued services of B. H. Morris as bis rider. Bank Note wanted the advantage, as he had little to spare from Polonaise. Mr. W. W. Higgins, the well-known Wellington owner, had a team of five horses racing on the opening day at Otaki. Of them the English Joy Bird was the only one to win a race. In her previous essays Joy Bird had shown an inclination to tire after going five furlongs, but yesterday she ran right out a solid six furlongs on a very heavy track. Black Mint has been working well a,t. Tientham of late, and at the recent Banner irk* meeting put up a good battle, to be beaten by his stable mate Royal Game. At Otaki yesterday this gelding, which is about 17 hands high, surprised those present by beginning most brilliantly in the Pakibo Hack. He led all the way and won from some useful hacks. The Wellington-owned Star Shell, who showed excellent form in hack flat events last, autumn and won the hurdle race at Otaki yesterday, should do well over the battens. He may take on open company at the coming Wellington meeting.
