OBITUARY.

MAJOR WxLLIAM- COYLE. The death occurred in Auckland on Friday of Major William Coyle, aged 73. For 30 years Major Coyle was a captain in the Royal Engineers, Chatham, England, and in 1897 was transferred from the Imperial Forces to the New Zealand Defence Department. He was an expert _in submarine mines and on arrival in "Auckland was appointed major in charge of Auckland fortifications and coast defence. During this period he reorganised the whole of the fortifications. He retired from military service in 1903. Major Coyle was a member of the Takapuna Jockey Club and also took a keen interest in other sports. He was a prominent Mason. His wife survives him, and there are two sons, Mr. Harry Coyle, of Auckland, and Mr. Bert Coyle, of Sydney. MR. WILLIAM C. WALL. [by telegraph.—-own correspondent.] WANGANUI, Sunday. The death has occurred of Mr. William Charles Wall, at the age of 44 years. As a surveyor Mr. Wall was associated with the. development of many rural districts and had an intimate knowledge of the back country of Wanganni. MR. JOSEPH CHAPMAN. [BY 3ELKGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.£ WANGANUI, Sunday. The death has occurred of Mr. Joseph Chapman, one of Wanganui's oldest and most respected citizens, at the age »f 68 years. Mr. Chapman was farming in the Wanganui district for 40 years, although for the past 10 years, on account of illhealth, he had lived in retirement at Wanganui East. His interest in public and national affairs was always keen. He was a life member of the Cosmopolitart Club and in his younger days as a member of the Alexandra Cavalry and Wairoa Light PJorsc he held the champion belt presented by Governor Fox for the best shot among the cadets. Mr. Chapman leaves a widow and a family.
