MISSING TOBACCONIST.
BODY POUND IN HARBOUR. LAST LETTER TO A FRIEND. The discovery in the Auckland harbour yesterday morning of the body of Thomas McMenemy, tobacconist, confirms the fears entertained for 1 is safety when ho was first missed from his'home on September 21. The body was first seen at 8 o'clock by some passengers on a launch travelling to the city from the upper harbour. The wharf police were notified and recovered the body opposite Northcote, it having floated two miles in the hour that had elapsed. The tide rip in that part of the harbour is very strong. McMcnemy's initials were found on the clothing. A cord was firmly attached to the left wrist, the end being formed into an empty loop as though, it had once been attached to a heavy object. It is understood McMenemy was seen on the day he disappeared walking in the vicinity of the new Amusement Park carrying a brown leather bag. It is presumed he met his fate in that vicinity and that the body was held under water until a day or two ago. The day after deceased's disappearance a friend received the following note:— "I'm sorry, but by the time you get this my body will bo found in the harbour. The Shortland Street business is too big a hurdle for me to jump." McMenemy was previously engaged in a hairdresser's business in Upper Queen Street but recently negotiated for premises at the corner of Shortland and O'Connell Streets. These were being prepared for his occupancy.
