TAKAPUNA TRAMWAYS.

OPPOSITION TO PURCHASE. THE RO'lL TO CLOSE 'TO-DAY. PiaDS for a campaign in opposition to the proposed purchase of the Takapuna tramways and ferries by the Takapuna Borough Council were discussed at a meeting of the Takapuna Batepayers and Besidents' Association last evening. The president, Mr. J. Wallace, presided | over an attendance of about 50. The question was raised whether husbands and wives of ratepayers would be entitled to vote on the proposal for the purchase of the tramways. Mr. A. M. Gould said he had not investigated the position, but .under the original Tramways Act only a person actually liable to a demand for rates was entitled to vote, and husbands and wives of ratepayers could not vote. He was not certain whether' the position had been altered by later amendments to the Act. He skid there was another proposal to be submitted to the ratepayers for the raising of a loan to purchase the undertaking. All persons having a ratepayers' qualification, which included husbands and wives of ratepayers, would be entitled to vote on this proposal. Therefore, it appeared that ultimately all having ratepayers' qualifications "wonld be able to exercise a vote. It was decided to accept names of husbands and wives of ratepayers for enrolment until the position was clear :n order to give all an opportunity to vote on the loan proposal. Attention was drawn to the fact that the supplementary roll will close at 5 p.m. to-day, an announcement which (paused considerable Surprise. All were urged to make certain of the enrolment of their friends. It was decided to hold a series of public meetings in different parts of the borough, and to thoroughly canvass all districts and distribute leaflets. A number of offers to guarantee a portion of the expenses of the campaign were received from those present, and it was decided to take up collections at the public meetings. It was decided 1o establish an information bureau in a central position.

After further details had been discussed it was decided to hold another meeting next Wednesday evening provided it did not clash with a public meeting.
