DAIRY PRODUCE FREIGHTS.
CARRIAGE ON THE RAILWAYS.
RATES FOR LONG DISTANCES.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERSTON NORTH. Thursday. &"A meeting of the executive of the Wellington-West Coast Dairy ' Companies' Association resolved to protest against the provision regarding the carriage of butter and cheese appearing in the Gazette of May 6, which fixes lower railway charges on long distances. This arrangement is deemed to have been made in the interests of one dairy company, and is claimed to. be a disadvantage to all dairy companies in the Wellington province.
It was also resolved that a further meeting of the executive should be held to take steps to combat the arrangement, members of Parliament for the districts covered by the association to be asked to attend the meeting and discuss what future action shall be taken.
The protest is against a special tariff for the carriage of butter or cheese in 5 or "LO-ton lots for distances of 175 miles or more. It prescribes a flat rate of 43s 2d a ton for all distances from 175 to 340 miles inclusive, this' charge being increased by 5d a ton for every additional five miles. The effect of the 175-540 miles flat rate would be that consignments of butter from any point between Gardner's siding (near Mataroa) and Frankton could be railed to Wellington at tho special rate. It would similarly apply to all stations between Taurnarunui and Palmerston North consignments to Auckland. / ;!
