Sir John was taken to various places of interest in the city and inspected the site and plam for the civic centre. The visitors will leave for Rotorua to-day. Mr. B. S. Rowntree, managing director of Rowntree and Company, Limited, York, England, is a passenger on the Niagara, which is due at Auckland from Vancouver on Monday. Mr. Rowntree, who will proceed to Australia and the East, is a keen student of social and industrial conditions and has devoted much time to these questions in the United Kingdom. He has written several books dealing with unemployment, labour, industrial and social conditions generally.
