TAKAPUNA TRAMWAYS.
MUN IC! PALI SAT lON SCHEME. > POLL ON OCTOBER 22. Matters arcs moving qnickly in connection with the scheme for the mnnicipnlisation of the Takapona tramway and ferry service. Petitions demanding a poll upon the Borough Coimcil's proposal to pur- i chase the assets of the Takapana Tramways and ferry service have been in circulation for some days, one promoted by the Ferry Company and the other by opponents of the scheme. That set afloat by the company, bearing 216 signatures, outstripped its rival and was presented to last night's meeting of the Borough Conncil. .As it bore more than the requisite 5 per cent, of the total number of ratepayers, it was found to be in order. The council accordingly resolved that a poll be held on Friday, October 22. In the meanwhile, at every street corner in Talcapuna, knots of residents are to be seen at almost any hour of the day or evening, discussing the relative merits of trams and buses, the terms of the proposed purchase, the advisability of municipal 'management, and a variety of sideissues that will influence the final determination of the problem.
