SLIPS HINDER TRAFFIC.

MANAWATU GORGE ROAD. DANGER OF FURTHER FALLS. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PALMERSTON NORTH. Wednesday. The Manawatu Gorge Road, which had been blocked by extensive slips yesterday was again opened to traffic this morning. The road had been blocked for a distance of a mile and the workmen, even with the help of the Main Highways Board's excavator, had an arduous task in removing the large amount of debris. To add to their task another slip came down last night, bat did not quite cover the road. *A mass of earth which threatened to leave the hillside yesterday did not slip, but the danger is by no means averted. It was feared yesterday that a portion' of the made-up road, which is supported on concrete pillars, would collapse, as the earth from the slips had blocked the culverts and was holding a large quantity of water back. Had the pressure at that point not been speedily relieved the roadway would in all probability have collapsed. A service car managed to get through the gorge this morning but it is not unlikely that further slips will take place as the hillsides are sodden after continuous rain.
