WORK OF RIVER CONTROL.
THE WAIMAKARIRI SCHEME. PROPOSAL ON RIGHT LINES. [by telegraph.-—own correspondent.] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. " I saw nothing which gave me cause to think the work of river control in New Zealand is on tine wrong lines, and as a result of my investigations I am satisfied that the scheme for control of the Waimakariri, as proposed by your trust, is suitable." This is the opinion of Mr. F. W. Furkert, engineer in chief to the Public Works Department, as contained in a report presented at to-day's meeting of the Waimakariri River Trust. Mr. Furkert, who is at present abroad, w»s requested by the trust to investigate river problems in other countries, with a view to ascertaining whether or not the scheme adopted by the trust for the control of the Waimakariri River was suitable. It was decided to take another poll on the Waimakariri loan proposals as soon as the rolls were completed. The secretary, Mr. C. W. Hervey, read the following cablegram from Mr. Furkert: "I have examined river works in America and Italy and consider the scheme adopted by the trust for tho control of tho Waimakariri River satisfactory and generally in accordance with the best practice."
