OPENING NEXT THURSDAY.

The synod of the Auckland Diocese of the Anglican Church will open in St. Mary's Parish Hall, Parnell, next Thursday. The opening session will be preceded by a quiet day for the clergy and laity on Wednesday to be conducted by Canon W. Fanccurt, vicar of All Saints' Church, Palmerston North. At the evening service in St. Mary's Cathedral Archbishop Averill will deliver portion of his charge to synod. The opening of synod will take place at the Cathedral on Thursday, beginning with the celebration of Holy Communion at 8 a.m. Members will assemble in the cathedral at 10.30 a.m., when synod will be constituted and Archbishop Averill will deliver his charge. Synod will reassemble in x the hall at 3 p.m. for the transaction •of business. Afternoon and evening sessions will be held on sitting days. Among special gatherings will be a conference of the lay members at 10 a.m. on Friday, the annual festival of St. John's College Association at Tamaki on Saturday morning, and a conference of the clergy at 10 a.m. on the following Tuesday. Sunday, October 17, will be Synod Sunday at, the cathedral. Holy Communion will be celebrated by the archbishop at 8 a.m., and the preacher at the morning service will be Canon Archdall, headmaster of King's College. The preacher in the evening will be the Rev. A. M. Niblock, vicar 'of St. Augustine's Church, Stanley Bay. Members of synod, will be entertained by Archbishop and Mrs. Averill at various functions during the week, the principal of these being an "At Home" at Bishopscourt on Saturday, October 16. The ladies of the several Auckland parishes will entertain the members at tea in Bishopscourt library each synod evening, tea being followed by evensong in the cathedral at 7 p.m. There will be a celebration of the Holy Communion at the cathedral each synod day at 7.30 a.m., with the exception of the opening day, followed by matins at 9.30 a.m.
