When the bridging of the gap to Wayby was first' suggested the Main Highways Board was faced with the problem of choosing the route from three proposals. Claims were advanced for a 'highway along the West Coast through Helensville, the East Coast route was to pass through Waiwera and Silverdale, and the third proposal was for a central road. Tho Highways Boai'd intimated that it was prepared to concentrate on one route. The No. 1 District Council was requested to make a recommendation after arranging for the contributions of the local bodies, A special report was obtained by the district engineer of Public Works, and the district council and the Highways Board decided that the western route could be eliminated from consideration on acount of its length. The Highways Board has ordered surveys of the eastern and central routes and the plans and estimates are almost complete. Mr, M. H. Wynyard, the motorists' representative on the board, stated yesterday that the plans will be submitted to the No. 1 District Council and a recommendation will be made to the Main Highways Board.
