MATCH AGAINST SUSSEX. VISITORS 8 FOB 281 RUNS. BARDSLEY 106 NOT OUT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 5.5 p.m.) Reutar, LONDON, Aug. !8. The Australian cricketers this morning commenced a match against Sussex- as Brighton. There were 10,000 spectators, The weather was fine and the wicket in good condition. The county was represented by A. E. Gilligan, A. H. Gilligan, Holmes, Holdsworth, Williams, Duleep Sinhji, Browne, Bcwley, Tate, Cook and Cox. Collins, Gregory, Ellis, Hendry and Richardson stood out of the visitors' if am. Bardsley won the toss and the Australians batted. Gilligan and Tato opened tho attack on a fast wicket.

Ponsford had ono life ; and then smacked a ball into the hands of Gilligan at 'first slip. Macartney was disappointing. Ho had played only five balls when he was dismissed. Woodfull batted solidly and his partnership with Ryder took the score to 69 for threo wickets. Then Ryder was dismissed. Bardsley filled the vacancy. He drove lustily arid batted freely, scoring in all directions. * Woodfujl continued to bat , solidly until he went out leg-beforo to Tate. , Andrews followed and caused an interruption for 10 minutes through receiving a painful blow on ono of his legs from Gilligan. -He• then, s;vsldenly attacked the bowling and scored 13 runs off one over. At the tea adjournment the score was 202 for four wickets. When play was lesumed Bardsley batted brilliantly, scoring frequently with his characteristic offdrives. Many runs were notched from overthrows, the result of poor backing up. Bardsley was not np to his usual form. He frequently mistimed and was continually beaten by the pace of Tate. Andrews played solidly against tho good bowling, which negatived the slackness of tho fielding. COUNTY INNINGS DECLARED. VISITORS JUST MISS A WIN. Reuter. LONDON, Aug. 27. The cricket match, Australia v. Kent, ended in a draw to-day at Canterbury. Tho County eleven made a poor start in their second innings, five wickets falling rapidly for 32 runs. Then Woolley and Knott stopped the procession. With a straight drive off Grimmett for four Knott saved a single innings defeat which had appeared to be likely. Woolley played at his best,, off-driving and cutting excellently. Ho scored mainly fours and hit two sixes off successive balls from Mailey. He was dismissed by a superb catch by Macartney in the long field. Tho ball went high overhead and travelled very fast. "J, '

Woolley had been at the crease 160 minutes and his score included two sixes and eight fours. The partnership had lasted 105 minutes and had produced 127 runs.

Ten minutes later, after the addition of six runs, Knott was bowled by Gregory after having given a sound display in which he had hit seven fours. When the score was 219 for nine wickets Chapman sportingly declared the innings closed at 3.45 p.m., leaving Australia 93 minutes in which-to secure 155 runs to win. *' ■ ~

The tea adjournment reduced the time at Australia's disposal to 80 minutes.' Hendry and Ellis started brightly. They made 25 in ten minutes. Then' the former was beaten by Freeman with a ball which broke, back. *

With well-timed leg boundaries Ellis added 22 while Richardson scored a single. Ellis was beaten by a ball, which com,' pletely mystified him. Tho total was then 58 for two wickets. Tho remaining batsmen scored so slowly that a draw was inevitable. Stumps were drawn at 5.10 p.m. to enable the Australians to catch a train for Brighton.
