KALGOORLIE MURDERS.

OF TRIAL. STORY OF ACCUSED MAN. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) PERTH. Aug. 28. The trial was continued of Phillip Treffene and William Coulter, who are charged with the murder of Inspector Walsh near Kalgoorlie. Haynes, counsel for accused, con--tinued his address to the jury. Ho gave Tr'efferie's version of the shooting. Counsel said Inspector Walsh and his colleague, Detective Pitman, were watching Treffene, who was working alone. The officers expected a mate of Treffene's to join him, as the tracks of motor-cars were visible in the vicinity!

Eventually Treffene left the crushing jplajtf, I '/' carrying a shotgun over his 'shpiiider and a bar of gold' l in his left "fand'r Ho proceeded down the bush ,'|ra"cs( The two detectives then called out: "Hold on, Phil. We want you." Treffene began to run away and the detectives chased him. When the latter were close to Treffene he stumbled and' nearly fell. He made a grab for his gun, which was discharged. Treffene dropped the gun and then noticed that Pitman was in' the act of fal|ing. Walsh also staggered and fell "to. .the ground. Waish had evidently been shot through his jugular vein. Pitman was shot in the eye. ,

- Treiffene obtained a drink of water for ' v alsh. Pitman in the meanwhile ceased to breathe. Treffene went" to procure something with which to staunch Walsh's bleeding,' but on his return ho found him dead. Clarke then arrived on the scene. He persuaded Treffene not to tell the poiice about the affair, as Treffene desired to do. They returned to Boulder.

Clarke .went to the plant on the same night, and next morning he told Treffene he had tried to burn the bodies, but could not manage it, so he had cut them UP-'
