WINTER COMPETITIONS. FINE STEEPLECHASE FINISH. A five,-miles cross-country championship was conducted at Alexandra Park on Saturday by the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycling ; Club on Leh'alf of the Auckland Centre. In a stirring finish T. M. Wilson won from G. Kelts iby about. 10yds. The other starters. Francis,' Swatton, Beaiichamp, Scowni Cooper. Mayr and Matson were some distance fur.ther back. Matson being third. Kells and, Wilson set out to dispute the lead and were not joined r by the rest of the competitors until Swatton drew level with them half-way through the second lap.' There was no appreciable chinge in the order until in the fourth .lap Cooper became more prominent and Scown retired. 4 Swatton could not maintain -the paae of Wilson and Kells on the :semi-final round and dropped , back. Matson passed Beaucharnp who was tiring. ' The two leaders settled down to a creat struggle on the final lap and first one arid then the other took- the lead. Wilson fell at the last hurdle and lost a three-yards' advantage but he recovered quickly and shot past Kelts to win by about 10yds. Matson headed Swatton and Beaucharnp for third place. _ • ; A sealed handicap decided in conjunction was won by Matson. Beaucharnp beinit second and Swatton third. . 5 - Other results are:— ' 75Yds.
