CONSTABLE'S CHASE.
A DESPERATE HALF-CASTE. ATTEMPTS AT SHOOTING. The story of a constable's narrow escape from shooting during the pursuit of a half-caste on horseback and after his arrest comes from Carnarvon, Western Australia. Constable Street was sent by motorcar to Maroonah Station on August 10, in response to a telephone message from i;ho manager of Lyndon. Station that a halfcaste named Togo had threatened one of the Maroonah station hands with a rifle, stolen two horses, and made off into she Bailee Ranges. Constable Street, accompanied by a black tracker and station native, followed Togo's tracks for about 25 miles, and found him camped. Togo jumped on a saddled horse and made off, rifle in hand. Pursued by the constable, Togo swung round in the saddle and attempted to shoot, but Street swerved behind hirn and discharged a shot over his head. Togo's second effort to shoot was spoiled in a similar manner. The half-caste then threw away his rifle and increased his speed, but another shot by Street brought him to a standstill and he was secured and taken to the homestead. There, while the constable was stooping down to secure his prisoner to a post, Togo, although handcuffed snatched the constable's fully-loaded automatic pistol from his holster, and putting it almost into the constable's face, pulled the trigger. Street's life was probably saved bv the fact that the pistol was secured by a safety catch. Casey, a station hand, rushed to Street's" aid, and together they secured the revolver. .When Togo's rifle was picked up it was found to be loaded.
