AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS.

MATCH AGAINST KENT. VISITORS ASSUME THE LEAD. RYDER SCORES A CENTURY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. .Renter. LONDON. Aug. 2G. On the second day of the cricketmatch, Australia v. Kent, at Canterbury the attendance totalled 15,000. When the Australians commenced their first innings Beslee and Ashdovn opened the bowling to Taylor and Collins. After a couple of overs Beslee found his length and had the batsmen in difficulties. When the total was 14 Taylor was taken easily in the slips. Macartney at the outset was streaky, but this phase soon passed and he opened out, pulling and driving Freeman superbly. When the partnership had put on 50 runs in 40 minutes, however, Macartney mistimed a stroke and was well taken at deep point. Collins in the meantime had scored 21 in an hour. Gregory gave a chance and was then caught in the long field. The board read 86 for three wickets. Collins was sound and unperturbed. He hit Woolley to leg attractively and drove Freeman vigorously. Freeman was spinning the ball effectively and kept the batsmen quiet. Good Innings by Ryder. With the appearance of Andrews the score mounted rapidly. Frequent changes of bowling had no effect until the total was 208. Then Andrews let pass a ball from Beslee which broke in and .took his off stump. He had batted 88 minutes and had hit eight fours. He was strong on the off side, his driving being bright and stylish. Runs then came slowly. Ryder had a life when he had made five. Hubble failed to field the ball when Ryder was two yards out from his crease. Collins was unlucky in going out to a ball from G. Bryan which kicked sharply. The Australian captain could not get his bat out of the way and skied the ball into the hands of Hubble. Collins had batted 200 minutes and his score included nine fours. The total then was 224 for five wickets.

Richardson and Hendry fell cheaply for the addition of seven runs. Ryder was driving powerfully and he hit 35 runs off three overs. Kent's total (321) was passed as a result of a boundary over-throw. Ryder continued to bat dashingly. Ho sent Hardinge to the boundary three times off successive balls and reached his 100 in 90 minutes. Eight minutes later Ryder was well held at mid-on after having played a spectacular innings during which he had hit two siSes and 17 fours. He had given three chances, including two at the wicket. His partnership with Ellis had yielded 140 runs in 63 minutes. The board then read 371 for eight wickets. Ellis, who had given valuable assistance to Ryder, had two lives when lie had made 23 and 35. He was easily stumped through going forward to a ball from Freeman. The visitors' innings closed for 386. Details of the scores are KENT. First Innings . . . . . . . • 321 AUSTRALIA.—First Innings.
