WELLINGTON JOY-RIDERS.
UNSUCCESSFUL PURSUIT. CAR STRIKES A VERANDAH. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Friday. Joy-riders had a narrow escape from arrest last evening when at about nine o'clock a car driven by a young man who had a girl with him, crashed into a verandah support near the corner of Cuba and Manners Streets. The car, which belongs to Mr. Charles Rough, had been taken from its parking place in Waring Taylor Street. A crowd soon gathered and a policeman demanded an explanation from the youthful driver. The driver's only answer was to throw the car into' gear an drive off toward Courtney Place at an alarming speed. Although taken aback for a moment, the constable was soon in hot pursuit, but he was unable to overtake the car and for the time being at least the fugitive had eluded the law. As far as is known the car has not yet been recovered.
