NORTHERN HIGHWAY.

HENDERSON TO HELENSViLLE THE PROPOSAL FOR PAVING. QUESTION OF THE SUBSIDY. Further steps have been taken by the Waitemata County Council in connection with the proposal for paving in permanent material the road from Henderson to Hclensville. The following recommendations by the engineer wero adopted by the council yesterday:— "That the council approach the Main Highways Board with a view to having an engineering survey mado of the main highway from Henderson Town District boundary to Helensville Bridge." "That the council recommend that the main highway from Henderson Town District boundary to Kumeu juuctioa be declared a Government road, on a £5 for £1 basis, and that the council's delegate on No. 1 Council be asked to bring the matter before the No. 1 Council." "That the Main Highways Board be asked to state what class of road construction it would be prepared to subsidise between Henderson and Helensville; that traffic tallies bo taken be tween Lincoln Road and Huapai." In connection with Hie council's contribution of £3735 toward the cost of constructing the Scroggy Hill Road and the Glen Eden-Oratta Road in concrete, the engineer reported that the compto tiou of the Henderson concreting would result in all country traffic going that way. The road served only a por tion of the country and was not a main road. Practically all the benefits would bo enjoyed by tho Glen Eden Town Board. On the engineer's recommendation it was de.cided to object to contributing to the Glen Eden Road.

ALBANY-WAINUI ROAD. PROTEST AGAINST DELAY. A protest' was made at a meeting of the Waitemata County Council yesterday regarding the action of the Main Highways Board in holding loan money for the Albany-Waiuui Road until the route of , the main northern highway from Auckland was definitely decided upon. Mr. A. Murray, engineer, said the council had asked that the road should be declared a Government road. It had been pointed out to the board that although the road past Dairy Flat was still in doubt, the Albany Road would be certain to form part of the highway. Though the board had admitted this they had refused to consider the portion separately from the other part of the road. Continuing, Mr. Murray said, definito information of the final location. of the route was promised before Christmas, but he was of opinion that it would be later before finality was reached. An endeavour was being made to havo the surveys of the proposed main highways to the North, now being carried out by the officers of tho Public Works Department, extended to the Albany end of Massey Road. He had asked the chairman of No. 1 District Highways Council to get authority to have the work completed so that definite and final information could bo obtained as to the respective merits- of each route. As it was very likely the East Coast route from Dairy Flat through Silverdale and Waiwera would be adopted, the engineer recommended that the position should be watched very carefully to ensure that the council's policy of a "central" route should receive every consideration. The council decided to protest strongly against the action of the Highways Board and to explain the position in which the council was placed by the board's decision. .
