POOR LAW RELIEF.
BRITAIN'S BURDEN GROWS. PROGRESS IN HOUSING. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Eecd. 8.35 u.m.) LONDON. Aug. 25. According to a report issued by the Ministry of Health all forms of poor relief for the year ended March 31, 1926, amounted to £39,500,000, compared with £36,750,000 in the previous year. The actual share of this cost, which was bome by the ratepayers, was £.54-,000,000. compared with £11,750,000 before the war. Whereas the years 1923-25 showed a decline in the number of persons who drew relief there was a sharp increase last year, the proportion being 312 per 10,000 of the population, compared with 287 in tho previous year. There are at present 1,240,000 recipients of relief. The report ascribes the increase to laxity of administration. Tho Ministry's report on bousing shows that the houses built have doubled in number within two years. Houses under construction have nearly doubled. The report makes it clear that substantial progress is now being made in overtaking the shortage of houses.
