The leaders of tlio coalminers are actively conferring in London. Tha general secretary of the Miners' Federation, Mr. A. J. Cook, has asked for an interview with the Minister of Labour, Sir Arthur Steel-Maitland, who is coming to London from Scotland. The situation on the coalfields appears to be improving. Everything is reported to bo quiet on tho Notts field. This morning the police at Mansfield reported that no pickets were in the streets. More miners are returning to work. It is understood that the Home Office has drawn up plans for the movement of largo numbers of police from London and other unaffected areas to tho coalfields. A high official states that the Homo Secretary, Sir W. Joynson-Hicks, is determined that the utmost possible protection shall bo provided for any miner who is willing to work. Every effort is being made to combat intimidation. Reports received by the Home Office show that the stories of intimidation and violence were exaggerated, but undoubtedly tho situation is difficult. There is no question of interference by any bodies other than the police.
