Atwood, has been advised that the Publio Works Department's steam suction dredge is deepening the berth in the. vicinity of Ngahina Wharf, Waihou River, Steamers are warned to proceed cautiously when berthing, and nontimetable vessels proceeding to . Paeroa within the next fortnight are recommended to communicate by telegraph with the harbourmaster at Paeroa. , BARON KELVIN ARRIVED. Fifty-seven days out from Montreal, the tramp steameT Baron Kelvin arrived at Auckland yesterday, and berthed at Central Wharf to unlond to the agency of the New Zealand Shipping Company. The vessel, whioh was built by her owners, Messrs. Hogarth and Son, for the Mediterranean trade, is making her first visit to New Zealand. She is ft sister-ship to the Baron Murray, which called at Auckland about three months ago. The Baron Kelvin loaded steel rails at Sydney, Cape Breton, and continued at Montreal, leaving on July 1 for Newport News, ■where "bunkers were taken in. The voyago was resumed on July 11 and fine weather continued until the steamer entered the Carribean Sea, when a hurricane was experienced for three <3ays. Strong northeasterly winds and mountainous seas retarded progress, and water waa shipped fore and art. She will later load in the South, and will sail from Wellington for London, via Panama, on September 20. H.M's. LABURNUM DUE TO-DAY. After an absence of four months in tha Pacific Islands, H.M.S. Laburnum will return to port to-day. She left Auckland on April 26, and during the earlier part of the cruise acted as escort to tho Tutanekai with the Governor-General and party on board. THE MAUNGANUI. The Royal Mail liner Mannganui will arrive at Wellington oh Monday from San Francisco, and will withdraw from the service for some time.. She wilj eommenoo Homeward loading about three days later, ROSS SEA WHALERS. Two Norwegian whale-chasers, Star IV. and Star V., have left Port Chalmers for the whaling base f.t Stewart Island. These two vessels are the last of the five overhauled after last season's whaling in Ross Sea. Two more are stationed at Stewart Island, but will not need overhaul, as they were not employed last season. The two mother ships, expected from Europe about October, are bringing three more chasers, ono. an oil-burnar, similar ta tho large oiltanker, making her first trip aa a whaler.
