THAMES AFFAIRS.
DRAINAGE OPERATIONS. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] THAMES. Thursday. The Thames County Council is endeavouring to arrange a deputation of local bodies interested to approach the Minister of Public Works in connection with the speeding up of the road works between Kauaeranga and Tairua. The contractor, Mr. C. W. Pottcrton, is making good progress with the building of the isolation ward and laundry at the Thames Hospital. The ward will be an up-to-date building and will be separate from the laundry, which will be a brick building attached to the boilerhouse. The cost of both buildings is £5200. At a recent meeting of the Horahia Drainage Board the chief drainage engineer advised that a vote of £2500 (£2 for £1) was placed on last year's appropriations for levelling the stopbanks in the Hauraki Plains area and a portion of this amount would be available to the board. It was suggested the board should prepare plans and estimates and submit them for approval. The department would be carrying out improvements to the stopbanks from the six-mile peg (near the Horahia Road) southward, so that the board should now consider works from that point northward. A sum of £7OO (£2 for £1) was available for the board's area, but as the department would be carrying out a portion of the work it expected to collect a portion of the vote. Levels were available from the Lands Office and the board's engineer was advised to consult the lands drainage engineer. Under the most favourable conditions spoil should not be won from any point, nearer than. Bft. from the toe of the bank. The chairman and Messrs. Mol&i: and Hale were deputed to confer .with Mr. E. Taylor, with power to act.
