DEFAULTING APPRENTICES

BOYS ABSENT FROM CLASSES. WELLINGTON PROSECUTIONS. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] i WELLINGTON, Thursday. Four youths apprenticed by the provision of the Wellington, painters; and decorators' 50-mile radius apprenticeship order wero prosecuted in the Magistrate's Court to-day by the Labour Department for failing to attend the Wellington Technical College as directed by the ' Apprenticeship Committee in accordance with the order. Mr. R. T. Bailey, of the Labour Department, said the cases were the first which had been brought in New Zealand. The Arbitration Court had made an order in which powers were delegated to the Apprenticeship Committee to see that boys attended the technical school. The magistrate, Mr. W. G. Riddell, said he saw no reason why the boys should tiot attend the technical school to become more proficient. A fine of IQ3 was imposed in each case.
