LITERARY SOCIETY.

The Birkdale Literary and Debating Society, which was inaugurated a few months ago, is proving a live body. "An Evening with Charles Dickens" was held oh Wednesday evening, when there was an excellent attendance. Mr. A. Woodhams read an interesting essay on the life and work of the great novelist, laying stress on the social benefits which resulted from the wide-spread publication of his books. Mr. Woodhams read humorous extracts from two or three novels, and then scenes were staged From "Oliver Twist,"' "Martin Chuzzlewit," and "Pickwick Papers," the parts being taken by various members of the society.
