NEW RAILWAY NATION.

DESIGN. OF BUILDING.

ARCHITECTS TO COLLABORATE.

AUCKLAND FIRM APPOINTED. The /Railway Department "has invited Messrs. Gummer and Ford, of' Auckland, to collaborate with the chief engineer of railways in the ' preparation of " the final designs for the new railway station building. This announcement' was made by Mr. W. R.' Davidson, acting-chief engineer of railways, who arrived at Auckland from Wellington yesterday. " In view of the civic importance of the main railway station and its prominent position it is considered that the services of an architect of high standing should be obtained and that the architect should belong to Auckland," Mr. Davidson said. " The selection of such architect has been the subject of very earnest consideration. It was intended to offer the architectural" design of the building for open competition, but this would have involved a serious loss of time and the waste of much time and effort on the part of the competitors. " Without very close collaboration with the officers of the department and an intimate knowledge of the functions of a large railway station, competitors could not hope to meet requirements. It has now been decided that the most businesslike and straightforward method is to make a definite selection of a suitable architect, and the firm of Messrs. Gummer and Ford is being invited to collaborate with the chief .engineer of railways in the prpparation of the final designs for tho station building."
