CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP
KEEN ENGLISH CONTEST. LANCASHIRE ASSUMES LEAD. (Received 10.5 p.m.) ; Renter.-Sun. 1 LONDON, Aug. 24. In , the county cripket competitions Yorkshire in their first innings against, Surrey scored 274 runs (Holmes 51, Sut cliffe 71, Rhodes 96). The second innings yielded 265 for no wickets (Holmes not out 127, Sutclifto not out 131). Surrey in their first innings il'He 355 for nine wickets and declared (Hohbs 102, Fender 72). The match was drawn. Rhodes completed his, 1000 runs and 100 wickets for the season. He has now accomplished this doube feat 16 times and has beaten Hirst's record of 15. Hampshire in their first innings against Lancashire were disposed of for' 109. MacDonald took four wickets for 30, and R. Tyldesley three for 20. The second venture produced 313 (Brown 52, Livesoy 54, Mead not out 132). Mead completed his 2000 runs for the season. Lancashire in their first innings scoted 316 for seven wickets and declared : (Watson not out 127, R, Tyldesley 55). Tho second inn ings' total was 100 for two wickets (Hallows not out 51). Lancashire won by eight wickets.
Notts in their first innings against Middlesex scored 387 (Payton .109, Flint 50,' A. Staples 82). Allen took four wickets for 86. ; The second venture yielded 190 for six wickets, declared (Whysall 106). Middlesex in their first innings made 209 (Mann not out 77).- S. Staples took four wickets for 46 and Barratt four for 53. The score in: the second innings was 354 (Allen 103, Hendreu 82, Mann 54). S. Staples took five wickets for 75. Notts .won by. 14 runs.
Batting 5 for Gloucester against Essex Seabrook made 132 runs.. ■ For Essex Nicholls took seven wickets for 59. Tho match was drawn. For' Derby against. Kent Lee made 191. Worthington took five wickets for 74 and Leo five for 87.' For - Kent Freeman took six wickets for 120. The match was diawn.
For Glamorgan against Worcester Turnbull made 106 not out. Mercer took six wickets for 33. The match was drawn. For Sussex against Warwick Bowley made 106. A. E. Gilligan took five wickets for 32. The match: was drawn.
The contest for the'championship is the keenest, known for several seasons. Lancashire's victory to-day over Hampshire deposes Yorkshire fi;om the leadership..
