SWIRLING WATERS.

PHENOMENON AT SEA. , EXPERIENCE' OF MAHENO. A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Aug: 25, •When tho steamer Maheno was about 200 miles from Sydney Heads on her voyage from Auckland a huge, swirling patch of .water was observed .by the master, and officers. The cause of the phe nomenon is a mystery. It is considered likely that a submarine disturbance was responsible., A considerable quantity of seaweed was noticed floating on the surface of the water. Many sharks were seen cruising around, indicating that in all probability fish had been- killed or stunned by the force of the disturbance. •' , ( To test the theory of an earthquake the temperature of the water was taken as the vessel passed through the patch. Tho reading,,, however, was about 65 degrees, which is about normal. Tho patch of broken water extended for about one mile and a-half. The line of demarcation between the smooth and the rough waters was very clear. . , For a long time after the Maheno had passed the swirling waters could still le seen. This showed that, the disturbance was not of a temporary character.
