EXPERT BURGLARS.

OPERATIONS tN WELLINGTON.

'SEVERAL, SHOPS ENTERED.

TOBACCO AND COPPERS STOLEN. [BT TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] : ~'.Y 'WELLINGTON. Wednesday. . Expert -burglars have been operating in the city of late and. during the ,last five' days there have been at least five case? •, of .shops being broken into. The police are considerably handicapped by the fact that the marauders, always work with gloved hands so that there is no chance of detecting them by the fiAgerprint method. On Tuesday . night burglars entered by way of steps leading from a lane off Woodward Street into the rear of the premises of the Midland Tobacco shop, 196 A, Lambton Quay, and the adjoining shop of Mr. J. K. Saxelby, cheese merchant. The catch of the fanlight over the , back door of Mr. Saxelby's shop was prised open and, entering by this means, the burglars opened the door, in which the key had been left. This attempt did not benefit them much, however, for there were only a few pence in the fcilL

Having taken a hammer and cold chisel the burglars next turned their attention to' Mr. Palmer's establishment. They took over £2O worth of Mr. Palmer's property. On Monday night two thieves who were attempting to break into" the premises at 227,' Cuba Street, of Mr. George Carey, a leatlier-goo<Js dealer, were alarmed and decamped in a motor-car.

On Saturday night burglars operated in Cuba Street, when the following premises were broken into:—Hill Bros., grocers and. provision merchants; A. E. Preston,- Limited, butchers; and the New Zealand Trawling and Fish Supply Company. Hill Bros.' store was entered from the rear by means of a fire escape to the second floor. The burglars smashed a panel in the door of the shop and stole £ls to £2O worth of cigarettes and tobacco and 25s* in coppers. Ingress' to Preston's premises was obtained by smashing a window, but< here they got nothing, for there was no money in the till and no attempt was made on the safe. Neither did they get anything from the fish shop.
