LAND TAX RETURNS.
I Number of prosecutions. A number of prosecutions ; for failing to make returns of land were brought in .the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. J. W. Poyntoh, S.M. Mr. V. N." Hubble, who appeared for the Commissioner of Taxes, said the facts were practically the same in each case. [Defendants' had- not made returns and •default assessments were. made.. Defendants then made their' returns and the ■assessments had to be altered. ' No taxes were evaded, but the department was put to. the inconvenience and-expense of making the assessments and then altering . them.'' . ' ' ' .
Samuel Pemberton (Mr. Gould)', Matthew G.. Orr, Frank • Handley, Henry T. Shepherd (Mr. Toie), and Gordon Fisher were each fined £2, with costs and solicitor's fees.
