"A REGULAR DONNYBROOK."

EDENDALE ROAD INCIDENT. CONVICTIONS FOR- ASSAULT. "A regular Don'nybrook," was~tho description applied by' a' witness in the Police Court yesterday to an'incident in Edendale Road on the evening of July 3, which ' resulted in Robert John Williams n'nd his three sons, Percy Herbert, Clarence John, and Jeffrey 0. Williams, together with Walter. Leo Scott, being charged With assaulting Albert George .Winslow, Frank Burton and Philip Muriro.. There were three counts against each man., Mi\ L. N. Jacka ap* peared for the Williams family and Mr. A. G. Davis for Scott. Mr. Jacka said the accused had issued cross information charging the complainants with assault, and after argument it was decided to take all the cases together. . Evidence was given that the parties met,in an hotel at the .top .of Symonds Street, and Williams, senr., offered tp | shake hands with " Munro. Th^' latter asked if his- hands were clean, and hot words resulted. Winslow, Burton and Munro then ; left by tramcars and alleged | that soon after they dismounted at the Edendale terminus a motor-car containing the other party' drew across their path and the occupants' asked for an apology. Scott; leapt- from the car and attacked Winslow,,with the result that a general melee commenced. For the defence it was stated the meeting at the terminus was a coincidence and . Scott ■ was, leaving -the car to buy some fjjuit when he was attacked without provocation. The charge against Scott.of assaulting Burton was' withdrawn. The magistrate, Mr. Poynton, said he- accepted the story of Winslow',' Burton and Munro. The other story was too thin to be believed, but he would not like, to enter more .than one conviction in, each case. - The charges against, each accused were, therefore combined in. one, information! , The ■ case against' Robert John Williams was dismissed on payment of costs, and a fine of £2 with costs was imposed on each of the other four. Winslow, Burton and Munro were each ordered to receive £1 out of the fines', and the crossinformations against them were dismissed.
