\'f t \ ' TOWN SEWERAGE DAMAGE. PALMERSTON NORTH'S PLIGHT. A serious state of affairs was disclosed in a report of the Palmerston. North borough engineer, Mr. J.' R. Hughes, which was presented to the Borough Council on Wednesday evening. . The- report stated that the rising of the recent "flood waters'in the river caused the ponding back of: the, sewage in the Septic-tanks and subsequent .floating off of the matter, which, on, the Water receding, was de-posited-all over the filters and ground within the stopbanks surrounding the tanks. Repairs were immediately put in hand for the restoration of the outfall. The sewage of the borough was meantime being sent direct to the river by way of a by-pass constructed some few years ago. Had .it not been for this outlet matters would have been in. a considerably w'orse state. It was also stated that the river wk's continuing : to erode the shlngie 'bed opposite the . tanks.
